Hayward is a city in Sawyer County, Wisconsin, located next to the Namekagon River with a population of 2,318. As the county seat, Hayward has evolved from its 1850s logging roots into one of Wisconsin's premier outdoor recreation and tourism destinations.
Named for Anthony Judson Hayward, the lumberman who established the sawmill that launched the town's growth, Hayward welcomes visitors from around the world to experience its natural beauty, world-class events, and legendary fishing waters.

American Birkebeiner Cross-Country Ski Race
The largest cross-country ski marathon in North America has grown from an unknown local race in 1973 to hosting over 13,000 skiers annually. Now one of Hayward's most popular tourist attractions, the "Birkie" draws elite and recreational skiers from around the world to compete in this legendary 50km race.
Musky Festival
Hayward's largest community event celebrates the legendary muskellunge fish that made the area famous. Organized by the Hayward Area Chamber of Commerce, this festival includes fishing tournaments, family activities, and live entertainment.
Lumberjack World Championships

Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival
The largest mass-start mountain bike race in the United States has grown from 27 riders in 1983 to a capped field of 2,500 competitors. Riders tackle the challenging Chequamegon National Forest trails in two main races: the grueling 40-mile "Chequamegon 40" and the 16-mile "Short and Fat." This legendary race is a pilgrimage for mountain biking enthusiasts nationwide.
